Every email marketer tracks open rates and click rates obsessively, but bounce rates are often checked only when something goes wrong. That's a mistake. Your bounce rate is one of the primary signals inbox providers use to decide whether your future emails deserve to land in the inbox — and by the time a high rate shows up as a deliverability problem, the damage to your sender reputation is already done.

High bounce rate → signals to providers that you're sending to contacts who haven't engaged recently or who didn't opt in → reduces inbox placement → lower open rates → further decline in reputation.

How to get your bounce rate down

1. Verify your list before sending

Running your list through email verification removes invalid addresses before they can generate bounces. For most teams, a verification pass before each major campaign is the single most effective intervention.

2. Suppress bounced addresses immediately

Your ESP should auto-suppress hard bounces, but verify this is happening correctly. Any address that hard-bounced should never receive another email.

3. Re-engage or remove inactive subscribers

Subscribers who haven't opened or clicked in 90–180 days may have abandoned their inboxes. These aren't technically bounces yet, but they're risk. Send a re-engagement campaign; suppress those who don't respond.
